Lucy” by Jamaica Kincaid was first published in 1990. The story of the novella revolves around the titular character ‘Lucy.’
The novel opens in medias res. Lucy is born and brought up in the West Indies. She moves to the United States to become an au pair for a wealthy white family. Lucy’s story seems to be highly inspired by the own experiences of Jamaica Kincaid.
The tone of the author’s another work “A Small Place” has been retained in “Lucy.” However, the present story is simpler than the earlier works of the author. In the present story, the author has used less repetition and surrealism.
“Lucy” is first of Kincaid’s book that is set completely outside the Caribbean. However, it retains a very strong autobiographical basis.
