“The Breadwinner” by Deborah Ellis was first published in 2000. The book is also known as “Parvana.” The book proved to be highly successful, and amazingly by October 2013, 39 English language editions of the book were published.

The titular character Parvana is the protagonist of the novel. She is only an eleven years old girl, but the adverse circumstances faced by the family compel her to become the breadwinner for the family in a war-torn region, dominated by the Taliban, in Afghanistan.

It is the story of struggle for survival while earning bread for the other members of the family.
