Heads of States and governments met in Rio de Janeiro on 20-22 June 2012, for the United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development. The report that the Conference adopted acknowledges the need to further mainstream sustainable development at all levels, integrating its economic, social and environmental aspects. It recognizes these interlinkages, so as to achieve sustainable development in all its dimensions. The report inter alia recognizes that poverty eradication, changing unsustainable and promoting sustainable patterns of consumption and production and protecting and managing the natural resource base of economic and social development are the overarching objectives of and essential requirements for sustainable development.
