Ninfa, Tomas and four-year-old, Gloria have fled war torn El Salvador to “the land of the free and the home of the brave” -- by swimming and wading the Rio Grande River illegally.  They encounter dedicated Catholic nuns, protestant religious workers, as well as attorneys who are all a part of the “sanctuary movement” whose goal is to help people who can’t wait for the legal immigration process to work.

Attorney Carol McCarthy, nuns Sister Frances, and Sister Barbara are among professionals and amatures like seminary student Mark who are dedicated to help people they see as in need.  Davis is a reporter who is looking for the story of the movement.   The story he comes up with is traveling with one of the nuns and a carload of illegals as they try to evade the Border Patrol make it out of Texas to a more immigrant friendly jurisdiction.

A courtroom showdown  is the climax of the story where all sides clash and the issues all come to a head.
