This book is intended for four categories of persons: (1) Journalists who do not possess social science research background; (2) Mass communication students in various institutions of higher learning - both academic and professional; (3) Beginning social science students; and (4) Consumers of mass communicated social scientific data.

It is hoped that those mass communicators who have practiced their profession in the traditional technique of "who" says "what" to "whom" "when" "where" "how" and “why” would begin to think of a different approach to the practice of their calling and would seek assistance from appropriate quarters when they run into rough waters when applying the techniques taught in this book. The need for the old pros to update their skills and bring themselves up to date in the modern techniques of mass communication hardly requires emphasis.
Current and future students of mass communication should as well avail themselves of the opportunities that the social science disciplines offer for authentic information gathering. In this connection, it is the intention of this author to emphasise not only to students but also to teachers of mass communication, the need for journalists to modernise their information gathering, information processing and information presentation approaches. Thus far, mass communication students have been required to take other social science courses so that they could better appreciate social problems in terms of those disciplines - politics, economics, social dynamics and social - psychological variables.
