Excerpt from My Roommate's Secret:
Somewhere along the way, Shane and I became good friends. He really wasn't as bad as I first feared. In fact, he was a pretty great guy. He was generous and helpful. Shane was always going out of his way to do things for me and I couldn't help but appreciate all the work he put into our friendship. The more time I spent with him, the more I liked him.
Then I started liking him even more and it killed me. It made me feel like I was betraying his trust. I was happy being friends with Shane and I didn't want to ever ruin that. I knew I needed to keep those thoughts to myself and decided that I should spend less time with him, at least until I could get over the stupid crush I had on him.
“Hey, Josh! Party this Friday for Brian's birthday. You coming?” Shane asked me one day.
“Nope. I can't. I'm going home that night. It's my mom's birthday,” I said. It was a bad lie, but I couldn't think of a better excuse on the spot. This is why I hated lying. I was terrible at it.
“Aw. That sucks. I mean, it sucks that you can't come, not that your mom is having a birthday.”
I laughed. “I know what you meant, dumbass. Have a beer for me.”
“No problem! Tell your mom 'happy birthday' for me!”
Shane must've left for the party right after his last class ended on Friday because I didn't see him for the rest of the evening. Not until he swaggered into our room at 3AM, reeking of cigarette smoke and booze. The smell woke me up a little and in the dim light, I could just make out Shane undressing. I closed my eyes and was almost back to sleep when I felt the mattress shift. Heat enveloped me and pinned me down.
“Dude. What the hell? Your bed is the top bunk,” I said, feebly pushing Shane away from me. It felt like he was wearing nothing but his boxers.
“I know where mah bed ish,” Shane slurred. He wrapped his arms and legs around me tightly and my body began to react in ways I didn't want him to notice.
“Seriously. Get out, Shane. This isn't your bed.”
“I know,” he replied.
“Then move.”
“No.”
“Please move.”
I felt Shane shake his head. “I don't want to,” he whispered.
