Personal life

The term "shakira" is the Arabic word "grateful". Shakira, the full name Shakira Isabel Mebarak Ripoll, was born in Columbia on 2 February 1977. She is a successful singer in Latin America, but also all over the world.
Her parents are Nydia del Carmen Ripoll Torrado, of Spanish origin and William Mebarak Chadid, of Lebanese origin. She has eight step brothers and sisters from her father's previous marriage. Shakira’s religion is Roman Catholic. She speaks English, Portuguese, Italian and she handles Arabic pretty well. Shakira has an impressive IQ of 140.
The singer has showed creative spirit since an early age, composing her first poem, "La Rosa De Cristal" at four years old. Throughout her childhood she wrote a series of short literary works, while her first song was written at the age of eight. "Tus Gafas oscuras" was inspired by a motorcycle accident that caused the death of one of her step brothers.
Also at the age of four, her father took her to an oriental restaurant, where she first heard the specific sounds of the Middle East music. Soon she began to dance on the table, being acclaimed by the present persons. According to the artist, this was caused by "a natural instinct to move my hips and belly once with the music". Despite her passion for music, she was not included into her school choir because of her voice modulation, which was too steep. At the same time, her music teacher likened her voice to the sounds of a goat. The singer returned to the institution after winning her first music competition to prove her teacher her real potential.
At the age of eight the company where Shakira's father was working went bankrupt. While her family situation was stabilizing, she lived with her relatives in Los Angeles, California. On returning to Barranquilla she noticed that most of her family assets had been sold. Later Shakira said about this: "In my childish mind, this was the end of the world." Her father wanted to show her that the situation could be worse than that, taking her to an orphanage. After two years he began to sing at a series of events in her native city, earning some notoriety. Producer Monica Ariza, who was impressed by her songs, convinced the president of Sony Colombia, Ciro Vargas, to hold an audition for Shakira. She performed three songs and signed a contract for the production of three albums.
