There are many books available that teach sailing skills for avid sailors. This is for those who are new to sailing, those who are thinking about sailing and those who will just be a guest along for a ride.
Having sailed for many years in various parts of the world, I’ve learned that most people are not aware of what to expect or what is expected of them when going for a sail. Knowing some sailing basics will make the sailing experience more enjoyable for the guests and the skipper as well. The terms and language of sailing are a vital part of the sailing experience.
Guests invited for day of sailing usually starts at the dock with a lesson on sailing so each knows what to expect. The lesson usually gets expanded into a longer than necessary session. Better the guests have some basic knowledge prior to the experience so they can get on with the adventure. A short written explanation of what is expected of each one will make the experience much more enjoyable.
This is written for the first timers as well as for novice sailors. It is not a complete sailing guide. Other books have been written that are a better source of information for the more experienced sailor. Guests with some basic information prior to a sailing adventure will result in better experience. The goal is to have fun.
As a novice sailor, this primer will help to better understand and enjoy the sailing experience.
