Set in the Licolnshire fens in 1290AD.
When Ivo Longspee, a Norman landowner and kinsman to the Earl of Lincoln, dies of poisoning, Giles Fisher, a young fisherman, is suspected of the crime. Giles is imprisoned in the Spalding Priory gaol awaiting trial at Lincoln castle.
Hug Pinchbeck, a veteran bowman of the crusades and a healer, has one niece of whom he is very fond. The niece, Elizabeth, is in love with Gile Fisher. Hugh is convinced Giles in innocent of the crime and sets out to prove it.
The story unfolds against a background of Edward 1's England with the population suffering heavy taxation to finance the King's Scottish and Welsh wars.
