A completely new translation from the original Greek in contemporary English.

St John’s Gospel is a completely new, contemporary English translation of John’s Gospel based on the original Greek. Historically John's Gospel has arguably been the most compelling and influential of the four gospels. It tells us many things about Jesus that cannot be found in Matthew, Mark or Luke. Much of what we learn about Jesus in John has to do with the fact that he is presented as the complete revelation of God in human form—a fact that shaped the earliest Christian creeds.

This vibrant translation by Malcolm Bishop QC uses contemporary language and idioms to give a lawyer’s perspective on John’s story about Jesus. Unlike other translations Bishop highlights the extensive use of the present tense in John's narrative. In John the past tense is interspersed with the present tense (sometimes in the same sentence) in order to create a more lively and edgy narrative suitable to courtroom drama. The pace, immediacy and earthiness of Bishop’s translation vividly and colourfully portrays why Jesus was such a compelling figure to his contemporaries, and why he remains such a challenging individual to us today.

This fresh and vivid translation, crafted with the skills of a legal advocate, enables us in our day to hear the compelling voice of the Jesus of the Fourth Gospel.

Rev. Canon Professor Paul S. Fiddes, Professor of Systematic Theology, University of Oxford
