ABOUT THE BOOK

In 2003, a young stay-at-home mother living in Arizona woke up at four in the morning, still reeling from a dream that she could not shake out of her mind. Stephenie Meyer had never really wanted to be a writer and had never written so much as a single short story before, but she felt compelled to turn this dream into a novel. Although she tried to focus on her usual daily routine of caring for her three young sons and doing chores around the house and around her town of Cave Creek, the dream still lingered, filling her head with visions of a good-hearted but tortured vampire and the ordinary teenage girl who fell in love with him. Meyer eventually found a moment of free time and wrote down parts of her dream, fleshing out the ideas to give them a narrative and a voice. That story was at the root of Meyer’s bestselling series that would take the world by storm.

Meyer's inspiration led her to create a compelling and addictive young adult novel. She wrote the first draft of her novel in only three months, working whenever her schedule as a stay-at-home mother would allow, snatching moments of free time while her children were asleep or her husband, Pancho, took care of the chores. Instead of setting the story in sunny Arizona, the state where she grew up, Meyer chose the rainy forests of Forks, Washington.

EXCERPT FROM THE BOOK

After Stephenie and Pancho were married, they settled in Arizona again. When Meyer's oldest son was born, she decided that her dreams of law school were not really as important as her desire to stay home and focus on motherhood. After Gabe was born, Meyer's two other sons, Eli and Seth, soon followed.

In 2003, Meyer was a happy, content and busy stay-at-home who worked hard to tend to her three sons, all of them under the age of five. Her husband's work as an auditor kept the family well provided for. All the same, in what seemed like a magical moment of unexpected inspiration, Meyer's contented and simple life changed. When she had a dream about a vampire and a human girl, Meyer began to wonder if maybe she could be a writer, just like her many literary idols. She began to write down the story, at first just for fun and personal enjoyment...
