"How would you like to ship with me?"

Dick regarded me with a look of mingled surpise and inquiry.

"To be explicit: I have been thinking of making the tour of New England in search of sport and adventures. I want a companion. How would you like to ship for the voyage as first mate, with half the fish and half the trouble for your wages?"

My kinsman's quench countenance blazed with renewed light: "Cousin Robert, here's my hand on it. I'm ready for anything by land or sea! Hip, hip, hurrah!" he shouted, capering about the room as if he had never known sorrow.

Two Virginians take a summer tour of New England. Travel with them to New Bedford, whaling capital of the world, Martha's Vineyard and Nantucket, with their beauty and isolation, Boston with it's city sophistication, industrial Lowell and the White Mountains.

Meet Sea Captains, Land Sharks,  Native Americans, High Society and down to earth New England stock. Tour a whaler and attend a spiritualist meeting; meet lighthouse keepers, fishermen and the inventor of a perpetual motion machine. Enjoy Summer as it is meant to be.

This edition is taken from the serializations of 1860 and 61 and includes the drawings and sketches that accompanied the story.
