"Ugg! I will never learn these spelling words." My oldest son grumbled to me one Saturday night. With a solid "F" grade listed on last week's spelling test and faced with a list of fifteen new words he had to memorize by Friday, his little soul shrank within his frame as self-doubt crept into his mind.

"Well, what if your words were incorporated in a story?" I asked him. "The stories we read at school are boring." He complained. "What if I wrote the story?" I asked back. He squinted at me and replied skeptically "It could work…" He continued "Only if you make it a cool story with ninjas and zombies and stuff."

I replied "I can do that."

Ever weekend since then, throughout the entirety of his third-grade year, I wrote one short story after another making sure to include his spelling words for that week in the tale. What follows here is those stories. The spelling words in each story are highlighted in bold. This can be used as a learning aid for typical 3rd-grade level spelling words, or just for a series of interesting stories.
