Whilst on a business trip to Shanghai, Peter Newton buys a beautifully carved jewelry box from an old junk shop in the crowded city. It is a gift for his girlfriend back home in New York. The box turns out to contain within, a daguerreotype - the original form of photography - of four persons, one of whom, he discovers to his shock, is him. He has never seen the others before.
This is the beginning of a bizarre change in his life as he, his girlfriend and all who are associated with the daguerreotype are sought out and attacked by a sickle wielding killer.
How are the two connected, and why is Peter experiencing these flashes into another life? His search for answers leads him to Tepotzlan in Mexico, to London and finally to the bowels of the Large Hadron Collider in Switzerland where he finally confronts a man, guided by a voice of God, bent on initiating Armageddon
