“I’m sorry, but I have to break our date Friday night. There’s something important that came up unexpectedly. I received a letter in the mail today about a court date I have to attend in Salem.”
“Oh,” he murmured, in an interested tone. “Has something happened?”
“If you have a few minutes, I’ll explain,” she said, starting at the beginning about their trip to Salem and how it came to a disastrous end. “The letter is letting us know the court wants us to testify against the four people involved. I was hoping all that happened was in the past, but the court date is a reality.”
“Those people sound really weird,” he sighed heavily.
“Trust me, they are,” she agreed with him.
“Why don’t you let me drive you and Carol down for the court date?” His offer surprised Lacy.
“Are you sure you can take off school that day and what about football practice?” Lacy knew how they had football practice almost every night after school and this might be an inconvenience to the coach to lose one of his players.
“I’ll check with Coach Smith tonight and call you back. I’m sure it will be all right to miss one day of school since it will be on a Friday.”
“Okay, let me know, and thanks again.” She replaced the receiver.
Lacy felt better about going to Salem now. What could happen with Ryan along? Anyway, Steve and his gang were in custody, so there wouldn’t be a repeat of what he and the others had tried in June. Lacy went in search of her mother to ask if she minded Ryan driving them.
