German immigrant Gus is thrilled to become as an architect. Dedicated to his work, intelligent, handsome, and shy, the long-haired blue-eyed young man is conflicted about his attraction to other examples of handsome men. Unfortunately, Gus’s first experience with man on man sex is disastrous as a brutal stranger at the natatorium−where Gus enjoys swimming and the opportunity to check out the other naked swimmers−attempts to force himself upon the naïve young architect.

Retreating into solitude, Gus befriends an Italian construction worker he encounters on his job, a youth seeking to seduce Gus for financial compensation. Sex with Luigi exacerbates Gus’s guilt over his sexual desires. He escapes the temptations of the big city, moving to Topeka, Kansas to accept a position with the Atchison, Topeka, and Santa Fe Railroad.

Gus doesn’t escape temptation completely, ultimately succumbing to the lure of Zeke, a coworker at the train company. Gus and Zeke embark on an unsatisfactory, non-reciprocal relationship which Gus terminates and vows to remain celibate. A vow he inevitably breaks upon meeting Silas, the manager of the Plaza Hotel in Las Vegas, New Mexico. With Gus’s frequent need to travel for work, can the budding relationship endure?
