The Australian Corps gained a towering reputation as a fighting force during the First World War; firm in defence and nigh-on unstoppable in attack. Their men were all volunteers who had travelled from the furthest reaches of the Empire to serve in Europe; following on from the badly managed campaign at Gallipoli the Australians formed a heterogeneous corps on the Western Front in 1916.
