William Ralston Shedden-Ralston (1828-1889) was a British folklorist and writer who became famous as a translator from Russia. He was in Russia a number of times where he made friends with major Russian writers of those times such as Turgenev and Afanasyev.

This classical Russian fairy-tale that was collected and translated by William Ralston Shedden-Ralston. The story tells us of a bad wife which always disregarded and neglected her husband. When her husband asked her to do something she refused. Or in contrast situation when there was nothing needed, his wife started to interfere and bother him. And one day his patience reached it's end and he went to the forest to distract his grief and find something to teach her a good lesson. He thought that bottomless pit will be good enough for that purpose...
