The Balancing Game describes the strange and unique world occupied by a Jewish child, the daughter of refugees from Hitler’s Germany, growing up in post-war London and living in a run-down neighborhood. Naomi is obliged to maintain some kind of mental and physical balance between the two very different worlds she and her two younger sisters inhabit. The novel also tells the story of Felicity, a young woman who is pregnant with her first child and is living in Jerusalem during the period of the build-up to the Six-Day War of June 1967. The relations between Felicity, her parents in England, her husband, and the people around her occupy her as preparations for war go forward. The two tales intertwine, eventually connecting in an unexpected way.
