It's Christmas Eve, and Matthew Able has drunkenly used the Lord’s name in vain once too often. And now, a mysterious young man who bears a striking resemblance to the popular pictures of Jesus has apparently returned to earth for a second look at humanity. In return for salvation from the clutches of a vicious gang of bikers, Matt has reluctantly volunteered himself as the messiah's tour guide through the sinful streets of Babylon Flats.

Matt’s socialite sister, Mae, like most of the prominent women in town, is immediately infatuated with the charismatic newcomer, introduced by Matt as Chris Lord, and secretly envisions him as more than just the ideal host for her pet project, the Canaan Gardens Biblical Theme Park. Unfortunately, her husband, Nick Machiavelli, ruthlessly successful real estate developer, notes the glaze in her eyes, and suspects that Mr. Lord is little more than an opportunistic Casanova. With the aid of Lloyd Mongo, a psychopath skilled in the arts of demolition, Nick unwittingly sets in motion a plot that could end Christmas Day with the destruction of Matt as well as Chris Lord.

Is this man really the biblical Jesus, or is he an extraterrestrial emissary from some dimension above and beyond our concept of the universe? Either way, Matt has only twenty-four hours to find some proof that the folk of Babylon Flats are worth a second chance on judgment day, a task made doubly difficult by his tendency to disappear into a drunken stupor at the slightest provocation.

Salvation might take more than a miracle. For in this little town, the best lack all conviction, while the worst are full of passionate intensity.
