From then on, he did not let blindness define him or his work. With no other role models, he had to re-invent the wheel of teaching and exploration for himself. This he did and became a strong, valuable and inventive leader on the campus of the University of Michigan. Read how he, although was not eligible to serve his country in the WWI as a soldier, was still able to provide valuable service to his country through is civilian efforts.
