In his memoirs, Dr Alan Robertson recalls the devastating few days he spent at a friend's beach house high on the Dorset cliffs. At the time, he was a young London medical student and the year was 1900. By the time the book is written more than a decade has passed, but the events of those few days and what followed clearly left a lasting impression upon him and had a lasting impact on his life.
He initially feels uneasy as he accompanies his friend south from London by train. His uneasiness is further fuelled by a bizarre occurrence on that first night at his friend's beach house, and even more so the next day, following the arrival of his friend's cousin.
From there, things become truly strange, especially when the cousin disappears, the event sparking a violent confrontation that becomes a terrifying fight for survival.
From that point on all control is lost, the two friends finding themselves centre stage as their nightmare fully unfolds.
In the years after, Dr Robertson pieces together further parts of the puzzle. He learns what really happened all those years ago and accepts that there are some things he will never know for certain.
