Carolyn Wells (1862-1942) was an American poet and author.  Born in New Jersey, Wells married an heir to the Houghton-Mifflin publishing empire and worked as a librarian in Rahway before finding success as a writer of children's stories, prose, and especially mysteries.  Among her more memorable detective characters were Fleming Stone and Pennington Wise.
