In 2011, Digital Divide Data held an essay competition as part of its 10th anniversary celebrations. Invited to compete were all of the young men and women who now work at DDD while pursuing higher education degrees, along with the alumni who have finished their degrees and work either as DDD managers or in professional jobs elsewhere. Each was asked to describe his or her experience before, during and after their time at Digital Divide Data. They responded with enthusiasm. Current DDD staff and alumni wrote from all four DDD locations, in Phnom Penh and Battambang, Cambodia; in Vientiane, Laos; and in DDD’s newly opened office in Nairobi, Kenya. They sent dozens of essays, and they wrote with unabashed passion about an organization many of them call their second family. They tell us what it is like to take up the opportunity DDD gives them—including the hard work, long hours, and the many challenges they faced. But most of all they tell us that they have relished the chance to achieve. The winning essays are published here.
