One late autumn morning in Brighton, two bodies are discovered. An elderly man and a young man. Detective Trinder, on his first day at the force, appears to have solved both. The disappearance of a substantial sum of money and the girlfriend of the young man casts doubt on his judgement. The money, for a drug purchase due later in the day, brings a man called Moyser from London to the home of Jimmy Wilson. He wants a debt repaid and finding his money will satisfy it. In return for his assistance they begin a highly dangerous mission to recover cash, drugs and the gang leader himself.
