The Coon Hunters of Stouts Creek is Vol 2 of the Miller Family Saga. Vol 1 is entitled "Flossie Smith." Flossie Smith, a 12 year old reheaded tomboy, and blood brother to Josh Miller. On his birthday she recieves the gift of a 50% ownership in a coonhound from Josh. Flossie, already an accomplished match shooter, small game hunter, and fisherman openly states her desire to join Josh and the local men in the fall night hunts for raccoons. Already the shame of her mother, sisters, and aunt, Flossie faces strong opposition from them in her desire to join the hunt. Only a non compromising veto from her father, who sees in his youngest child a special spark, allows the young tomboy to pursue her heart's desire. When the season arrives, Josh discoverers that Flossie has a special connection to Bob their coonhound. So strong is that connection that Flossie can tell what the hound is doing at anyone moment. At the first club hunt, Bob, a yearling canine, is so impressive that the President of the club nominates the dog to the Nation Championship Raccoon Hunt in Knaw Bone. Opposition to Flossie's participation by the committee on participation is unanimous, "no females allowed." A state wide newspaper campaign can shake the will of the Knaw Bone hunt. Finally a National Magazine steps into the fray. The rest is history.
