The crash of a Piper Navajo PA 31-350 Navajo near Lake Placid, New York is more than just the story of a small plane that met a bad fate. The story also involves possible drug smuggling and a high profile lawyer, F. Lee Bailey, who represented one of the victim's relatives. The crash was accompanied by a heavy, driving snowstorm. The plane came down on Mount Nye. For some time the Civil Air Patrol continued looking for the Piper, all the while inhibited by snow covering on Mount Nye. By April spring was finally breaking through. Friction ensued when the family of one of the plane's three passengers charged the CAP with suspending its search too quickly. The CAP responded by delineating the potential dangers to rescue workers.
