Gonorrhea (gon-uh-REE-uh) affects over 700,000 individuals in the United States of America every year, making it one of the most common sexually transmitted disease. Especially in women, an untreated case of gonorrhea may cause serious scarring of the reproductive system. Around the globe, over 100 million people become infected with gonorrhea each year, and it has been the most reported communicable disease in the US. However, through education and safer sex practices, the amount of reported cases has dropped since 1984. There is a higher chance of infection that comes with a high number of sexual partners, lack of contraceptives such as condoms, and the younger ages of people engaging in sexual behavior.

There are many nicknames for gonorrhea, including the ‘clap,’ ‘drip,’ ‘strain,’ ‘white,’ and ‘dose.’ The infection is caused by a type of bacteria that enjoys living in the warm and moist parts of the human body, like the urethra, the channel that expels urine out of the bladder. However, the bacteria have also been known to thrive in the eyelids, body folds, and throat.

The microorganism that causes gonorrhea, Neisseria gonorrhoeae, is a gram-negative diplococcus that does not do well outside of the body. However, it is extremely contagious once transmitted to another person. The incubation period when sexually transmitted is anywhere from three to eight days.

In this book, you will discover many things about the bacteria that causes this infection, how it is transmitted, who is at risk, the signs and symptoms of gonorrhea, the dangers when it is not treated, new advances in gonorrhea, and available treatments.
