Review on Barnes&Noble:5 Stars: The Last Ark is a tale of a whole new world based on the premise of bad choices in our past, It is laced with real people mixed in with the fictional characters and a lot of "what ifs". I actually thought the "Wilson Concurrence" truly existed until I kept reading and I texted the author! What transpires due to this one action in time and how it absolutely MUST be changed for the survival of the human race, encompasses lifetimes of evolution. How it spreads out to space, the solar system and beyond, and the cost to humanity, is as epic as Star Wars and Star Trek. If this were to really happen and there were no humans who still had open hearts and sane minds, humanity would be finished.Delphine
Excerpt:“Kada," Ai began. "You came home. You were almost dead. I got some of my mobile remotes in as quickly as I could and stopped as much of the bleeding as possible with injections of tranexamic acid. I had to cauterize many other wounds. I sent word down to Winona, immediately, but it took three days before I could be assured that what she’d gotten was what I intended. I had to lower the temperature, here, until I could keep you in a controlled state of hypothermia. This kept you alive long enough for Winona to come up with the supplies. Once she was here, and she was able to take care of the immediate things that needed doing … like getting the tube into your stomach … I brought the temperature back up, and we started putting the rest of you back together. You’ve woken up to some degree thirteen times since you came home, including this one. Only this last time and the one just prior, were you anywhere near being yourself.”
“Ai’s remotes weren’t capable of doing a lot of what needed to be done, sister mine. So, I took care of all of that. He’s started making new ones that can do more. …just in case. They’re not done yet.”
“Do I want to know?”
“Probably not. How’s your leg?”
Wakanda peeked. It was really uncomfortable leaning forward. There were tubes between her legs.“My thigh’s kinda bad.”
“Lemme see.”
Winona moved the lower section of the blanket, so she could see her sister’s legs without sacrificing any of her dignity.
“On the contrary … this looks great! You should have seen… Oh, look! Ai! She has toes! …kinda.”
“Do I want to know?” Wakanda wrinkled her forehead and asked again.
“Well. All your toes were completely gone. Both feet. And half of your left hand. This muscle here…” she touched Wakanda’s calf from above the sheet, “…was nearly gone. It’s coming back nicely, though. This one over here…” the opposite thigh, “…had a huge chunk taken out,” she indicated two spots, “…from here to here. Your ribs showed in a lot of places on your back. …and I mean almost all of them. …and I’m not talking about just through the skin,” she stated matter-of-factly. “I mean bare bone. …exposed to the air. …except for the two that were missing. Half your scalp was gone, along with one of your ears.”
“Okay. I don’t think I want to hear any more right now.” As it was, she’d decided to stop hearing anything past the part where Winona had pointed to her leg. It was already a list far too long. She really didn’t know how she’d made it home alive.
“I’m only halfway done, sister-mine. And I would strongly suggest not looking in a mirror for a while, yet. But you’re healing well. It looks like you at least have a layer or two of skin over everything, and the missing muscles are starting to come back. According to the records, Ai is certain there won’t even be any scarring.”
