Owain, brought up by a former prostitute in a remote mountain village in Albany, finds himself rejected and despised by the rest of his community, including the father of Mairi, the girl he loves. Finding out that his father may be a man of wealth, Owain leaves his home in search of the truth not knowing his lover is pregnant.
Meanwhile in Lasgard, Albany's capital, Albrecht, the new Arch-Priest, discovers that his predecessor Lachlan may have been a heretic who murdered the former Queen and her midwife and abducted a child. Forced to compromise his principles to achieve his objective to lead his Church to victory against the hated Sidhe, the fairies of Celtic legend, Albrecht allies with Chrosal, the King's half-brother, to investigate the killings. Albrecht soon realises that Owain and his child are a threat to his plans, and seeks to destroy them. Owain has other problems, and soon faces danger and death after being conscripted into the army.
Albrecht's intention to build a Holy Army is thwarted by the neighbouring country of Morgenley who demand that the heir to Albany's throne seize a tooth from a legendary giant dragon before he can marry their Princess and unite the kingdoms. Albrecht soon finds that Lachlan has been manipulating everyone including Owain and the King of Morgenley, and the two men are set on a collision course that will change the course of their world forever, with Owain a pawn in their game.
