The Driver is an account by Dike Nwadike, the Driver and Personal Assistant to a very cunning and corrupt politician, Chief Utobo, in a utopian country called ‘The State’.
Dike graduated top of his class, but he is unable to find the type of job that befits his academic qualifications. This makes him to start working as a commercial bus driver. He meets his employer, Chief Utobo in a very bizarre circumstance along the major road while doing his work, and is forced to start working with somebody he knows is bad.
Dike observes, though very quietly, the activities of his boss as his boss rises from being just ‘godfather’ into becoming the President-Elect in ‘the State’. Dike’s conscience flogs him at each occasion that he notices Chief Utobo’s corrupt deal, but he is both helpless and in bondage, such that he cannot leave the services of his employer without some drastic consequences.
He must die twice in order to save the country from the fangs of Chief Utobo’s corrupt practices. But how can a dead man remove the President-Elect, Chief Utobo from his lofty position, and save the country from imminent doom?
