Academicians the world over are beginning to frown, and rightly so, upon lengthy introductions to scholarly books. However, the historical document presented in the following pages is so unique that a full explanation of its discovery and significance is certainly in order. History, and especially the bloody tale of Hernando Cortez and his conquest of Mexico, was far from my mind when I left my Oxford lodgings in July, 1967, bound for a four-week sojourn in Southern Spain. It will shortly become clear why I do not name the small fishing village I had chosen for my vacation spot. My choice of the village, as well as the small pension where I stayed, proved to be an excellent one. My landlord, whom I shall call Senor Gallegos, kept an excellent inn — cheap, clean, convenient to the beach and transportation. Senora Gallegos also had a most commendable way of pampering guests without being overly officious; she also had an earthy, sensual beauty that I found highly attractive.
