The Essex Coast

Photos, Drawings, Paintings & Digital Art by Douglas Carpenter

This 350-mile tour of the Essex Coast starts at the north boundary along the River Stour, glides past the historic town of Harwich at the mouth of the North Sea, heads south along the meandering coast, taking in the quaint seaside of Frinton-on-Sea, Walton-on-the-Naze and Clacton and finishes down past Southend-on-Sea on the River Thames estuary. There are many an old story to be told of smugglers, coast guards being murdered, the most haunted house in Essex and the most notorious tidal path in England.

There are great days out to be had at Maldon mud race, Burnham Regatta or Leigh on Sea art festival.

Riversides to be walked with mysteries to discovered as you go. On your walk see some of Britain's rare wildlife and migrating birds, frequently in dazzling, spectacular flocks.

There are Islands such as The Essex Archipelago like no other in Britain with secrets to be revealed.

Illustrated with over 200 photographs, digital art, maps old and new, drawing and paintings of Essex by the author.
