An old man in the December of his life, a fear of death after a long life and the hopelessness of a lost soul headed for purgatory. These are the elements a new tale entitled “The Foolish Man.” The account tells the story of Peter Doubletree who is on his death bed in a hospital waiting for the final curtain call of his life.
Peter Doubletree is a very successful man who has had everything go his way throughout all of his adult life. One might say that he has had the Midas touch on everything he gets involved with. However, he has been a failure in the relationships he has entered into in his personal life. The final act of his life is being played out between the walls of his hospital room with no one who could comfort him or relive his mind of the overwhelming burden he has been carrying for many years.
Something that happened to him in his youth has come to fruition. On the eve of his impending death, he is not ready to face the thing that he knew is eventually coming. His day of judgment is upon him and he regrets the day that he got involved with the scheme that put him on the road he is on; a road that not many mortals have traveled. The crazed condition of his mind will not let him sleep or even rest, for the drive that keeps him alive is strong, a strong will, that cannot hold out long against that of a celestial being, real or imaginary.
“The Foolish Man” is a story that will cause one to consider their mortality and where their path will lead too. It also teaches that the future is not to be feared, but to be embraced as a great adventure to be savored and enjoyed.
