The closet-archeologist, Dr. Stella Hunter settles down in upstate Montana to raise her adopted son. She lives in daily fear that someone somewhere might figure out how to ‘activate’ the boy’s curse, and little Gabriel Kraft would once again turn into the Fourth Horseman of the Apocalypse. It’s why she continues to search the history, desperate to find a clue—any clue—that would break the foul curse. Eventually, she learns that an incantation might exist that will lift the curse once and for all. All she needs to do is find the mythical gold scroll stored in a black onyx box that had been loaded on to a ship in Trieste–more than a thousand years ago. A ship that never reached its destination and whose wreckage may well lie scattered deep down on the Mediterranean seabed.
Carter is recovering from plastic surgery, done to smooth out his facial injuries suffered in a riot in Cairo. He won’t be able to set out on another insane quest any time soon, but that doesn’t stop Stella from outlining her plan to him, even though he is still heavily sedated. He thinks she’s being overly optimistic and is not sure he wants to set out on another insane quest, but before he has a chance to argue for caution and sanity, someone takes the reins out of his hands. By the time he is ready to be discharge from Water Reed, there is a deep crater in Montana, on the exact spot where once Stella’s yellow-siding house stood.
