Paul is a typical 10 year old bod boy who has a close relationship with his Mum and Dad and friends (and his dog).

The story begins in Melbourne with Harry packing up the house (50 boxes and counting) in preparation for their 4,000 km plane flight to Broome, in the north-west, to join with Ann. Paul has a few adventures before they leave like sleep walking. Once in Broome, in their government house, Paul explores the neighbourhood, anxious not to get lost. He signs up for school and befriends a neighbour and, though it is hot, they play DONKEY whereby one's kick doesn't touch the road. Paul joins the scouts as well as the tennis club so Harry is busy ferrying him around until he is friendly with other parents and they can share the load. How long will Paul stay in Broome? Will his Mum still have work the next year? The next book in the series called Trouble on the Farm answers these questions.
