The Lemming Factor is about how American Fundamentalists are getting everything they want. It is the equivalent of a theocratic mullah state. in which democracy is tatamount to mob rule. They have no intention of allowing you to be free.
Reconstructionists claim the Bible is the only authority for government and everything else. The problem is they are the ones who decide what God’s law is, and it’s their interpretation that decides if you live or die. Where would you fit in? According to Biblical law, being burned at the stake or stoned to death would be meted out for rape, kidnapping, murder, apostasy, heresy, blasphemy, witchcraft, astrology, adultery, sodomy, homosexuality, incest, female proscuity, abortions and wrong beliefs. Punishment for bankruptcy would include whipping and slavery.
In such a society the federal government would be responsible only for national defense. The church would take over everything else, including social services, health, education and welfare. Women would be relegated to the home or schools and would be prohibited from holding government positions.
The extraordinary events now sweeping the nation have enabled radical religious groups to dominate the Republican party. They are now in a position to take over the country as well. America is not yet a theocracy, but it soon may be – forty-eight out of fifty-one Republican Senators are now voting with the Christian right 100% of the time.
In February 2004 The Constitution Restoration Act of 2004 proposed that the Christian God was the “sovereign source” of all laws. This bill not only reverses the separation between church and state, it would forbid any legal challenges against officials who used their power to enforce their view of God’s Will. As proclaimed by Attorney General John Ashcroft, America’s chief law enforcement officer: “America has no king but Jesus!”
The Christian Right is systematically infiltrating the American political system. The Nazis came to power in exactly the same way. They too believed that they had been called on by God to save people from the abyss. The crux of the matter is that Fundamentalists recognize only their own version of religion. They believe in Bible innerancy and that they alone know how to interpret it. Behind their malicious attacks on the courts (called “vermin in black robes”) they intend for judges to uphold the law according to Old Testament revelations. The Grand Old Party – the GOP – has become “God’s Own People” marching as to war.
