When Eleanor Kent accepts the post as typist to a reclusive and very wealthy writer, Richard Lindford, she knows of the Lindford family only what she had read in magazines and newspapers. This, though, had not quite prepared Eleanor for what she finds at the impressive Lindford estate. Once a bright and happy home it now loomed cold and lonely in the shadow of a man horribly scarred by a terrible motorcar accident. Angry and bitter at the world Richard terrorises all those who come too close. Even his loved ones are driven away by his autocratic ways and ill-temper. This, however, is not enough to frighten his new typist. Having always been a strong-willed, competent woman Eleanor, at 27, was completely confident that there could be no problem as long as she did her work to satisfaction and her employer minded his manners. But she did not bargain on the effect her first face-to-face meeting with her new employer would have on her or the emotions that Richard's little girl and the rest of the household would awaken. Getting more and more involved with the lives of the people at Lindford Eleanor finds that Richard's scars lay deeper than simply what could be seen on the service. There was also the strange mystery of his wife's disappearance.  Had Miranda truly run away because she could not stand a life with the 'Monster of Lindford' anymore, or was the dear little housekeeper, Martha, right and had Miranda in fact been murdered? But who then was the murderer? Could it possibly have been Richard in a fit of rage or jealousy? To have any hope of happiness, not only for herself but also for the other inhabitants of the Manor, Eleanor must find the truth and solve the mystery of Miranda's disappearance. It is a dangerous course of action that leads to heart wrenching dicisions, dark suspicions and a conclusion that almost costs Eleanor her life.
