It’s Christmas in New Hampshire, 1985, and grade-schooler Pearl Hillis is moving into her new home—a mansion left to her family by her recently-deceased great-grandfather, Judge William Korbin. But the house is cold, and the stairs creak, and the basement has a funny...feeling, and people in the neighborhood leer uncertainly up at the windows.…This is the winter Pearl is finding things out about “putting on” adulthood, and its strange, discomfiting and frightening impressions.

On the other side of the world, in present-day Australia, Ephyra is returning to her parent’s property in the Darling Range to say one quick farewell to a dying mother she never saw eye-to-eye with, before moving on for good. She has a promising career as a reviewer for a respected magazine in Seattle, and a fiancé who’s ready to move to the greatest city in the history of the world—New York, New York. But this is a huge problem for Ephyra, whose mother, a well-respected prophetess, believes the city is the showground for the approaching end of the world.
