A book of poems by Victor Compton, an American Writer resident in France since 1981. An example :

And, You Were Mine
(for Hélène)

This room is yours forever.
You slept in this bed and died there
Like a candle gently burning out.
You left us with gentility and discretion.
We didn't even know that your last sigh
was your last. Your going was the
essence of polite withdrawal from
the Fete of Life. You didn't wish for anyone
to notice that your Soul was crossing
dimensions or for us to be sad that
we could not follow. You left us without
fear or fighting and told me the afternoon
of your departure, "You were the great Love
of my life," though we had been divorced
for fifteen years. I could only reply, truthfully,
"and you were mine."
