Strange things happen to 10 years-old Luke Baxter, after his family are about to be evicted from their London home. Just in time, they are offered a home in Ireland by Luke's great-uncle, at the old Lodge House on his estate.

This is much welcomed but, sadly, creates difficulties for them all – not least Luke and his younger sister, Rosie. Then one morning, the children are shocked to learn that their father has disappeared.......

Walking home from school one day, Luke decides to do some exploring. His curiosity leads him to discover a long neglected, and eerie, hidden place and, intrigued by what he finds there, he trespasses even further, and a search reveals an old magician's magic box. When attempting to open it, however, he is disturbed by a sudden frightening presence, and he flees the place in terror.

Feeling urged to make a later visit, Luke opens the box, and finds a familiar, but unusual object with promised magical power, with instructions which are explicit: 'tell no one of this, or the power is lost'.

Luke begins to search, alone, for his father – and his adventures from then on cause great concern and bewilderment – and not just for Luke himself.
