In 1938 a world war was in the offing, but the need to supply good weather information was still important. The most significant weather in the South came from the Arctic, and so remote stations were established there to regularly report conditions. Each year a supply ship went north to resupply stations with new staff, and all the provisions of every sort needed to survive at least a year. A new station had been built on Northampton Island and three new men were sent there for the next year. The recruitment process was not the best, and one man soon decided that he shouldn't have gone north, especially after being injured in a huge storm on the way north. Not enough vetting had taken place by the Federal Department. The dangers and vicissitudes of the Arctic would prove the greatest tests of the men's mettle, and brought out the weaknesses of character that would prove fatal: wild weather, total dark, disease, awesome animals. Who would survive, and how, became the major questions the men faced.
