Written as a companion volume to his earlier The Missouri Persecutions, Mormon leader B. H. Roberts wrote The Rise and Fall of Nauvoo for the same reasons, "to place in the hands of the youth of the Latter-day Saints a full statement of the persecutions endured by the early members of The Church..." and in the hope that "becoming acquainted with the story of the sufferings of the early Saints, the faith of the Gospel will become all the more dear to the hearts of their immediate posterity, and all the youth of Zion, for many generations to come.”

This volume covers the aftermath of the Mormon exodus from Missouri, their settlement in Nauvoo, the doctrinal development that occurred there, and ultimately the murder of Mormon founder Joseph Smith and the people's exodus from their homes yet again.
