Sex, exploitation, lust, and love come together in the New England all male college preparatory school where Chet and Bryce are roommates.  Chet proclaims his bisexuality; Bryce willingly submits to his roommate's insatiable sexual demands holding out the fantasy that someday something less exploitative and more romantic will develop.

Bryce convinces himself that Chet really loves him and that the macho soccer player’s sexual exploitations conceal his true feeling as a defense mechanism resulting from internalized homophobia.  Not even a concussion accidentally caused by Chet can shake Bryce’s romantic fantasies.  As the winter holiday approaches in their senior year, Chet unsuccessfully tries to get into the panties of any cheerleader from a nearby girl's school while Bryce becomes involved with the campus GLBT group and takes on responsibility for decorations at the annual Snow Ball dance between the two schools−harboring romantic notions of being escorted to the event by Chet.

Tension between the two reaches its peak the night of the dance; a tension not alleviated by the eruption of near violence when another gay student, Trevor, asks Bryce to dance a slow number with him.  Amid catcalls and treats of bodily harm from the football and soccer team members, Bryce and his friends, including lesbians from the girl’s school, defend their right to dance together.  Bryce is stunned by Chet’s reaction to the situation.
