Susan refuses to listen to her mother when she tells her she must remove the "Jason character from her new novel before it is published. Her mother warns her that Jason killed at least three people outside of the story in real life, when she once used him as a character in one of her books and that the killing only stopped after every single book was removed from the stores and burned.

As Susan doesn't believe that something like this is possible and thinks that her mother is either messing with her head or jealous of her success as an author, she disregards the warning and emails the manuscript to her publisher.

This has disasterous results, for the following  morning a man resembling Jason comes into her house when her mother is visiting her and beats her mother over the head with an iron bar, Then he leaves, but not before he has grined at Susan and revealed his gold tooth, which is his tell.

The police don't believe Susan when she tells them it was Jason, especially once she has told them that he is a character from her book and was also once a character in one of her mother's books, but after he goes after Susan too, by posing first as a doctor and then a policeman, they are forced to take her seriously.

She explains that in the case of her mother's book, Jason was only stopped once all the copies of her book had been burned, so they set about collecting all the copies of Susan's book. But Jason is not ready to give up yet, as he needs to be a character within a book in order to exist. This is why he hangs on to two last copies, which are finally taken away from him.  His ending is dramatic and final in the end, but then he is gone forever.

.

When she tells the police that Jason is a character out of her novel and also a novel that her mother once wrote, they don't take her story seriously, and for a time she becomes a suspect in her mother;s murder.

She then recalls how her mother once defeated Jason and along with her publisher and some friends, she comes up with her own plan to eliminate Jason for once and for all.  But will eliminating all trace of the book get rid of Jason for a second time? Or will Jason now come after Susan for trying to get rid of him?
