The book, The Jesus Family Tomb, continues to provoke fierce controversy concerning the resurrection of Jesus and his possible marriage to Mary Magdalene. Baltimore archaeologist, Roger Sheppard, thinks the book makes a good case, but has two loose ends – the genuineness of the ossuary, a burial bone box, attributed to Mary Magdalene and the identity of the missing tenth ossuary. He embarks on an investigation to tie up both ends. During the investigation he has romantic involvements with his ex-wife, Karen, and his assistant Mary Munford. After two attempts on his life and the murder of his colleague, Jim Talbot, he carries the investigation to Jerusalem. There he is kidnapped and questioned by an unknown group and meets a man who claims to be a Knights Templar.

He finds an entrance to the Jesus Tomb, and he and Mary enter it. There they find the answer to the two loose ends, but are trapped in the tomb.

Back in Baltimore he learns from the F.B.I. the identity of the group that has been threatening him, and that they have been informed of his every move by a mole. He finds the identity of the mole and has a final confrontation with the group.
