Synopsis
The Tragedy of Coffee Beans and Other Stories is the first collection of poetry by C. Becking (Chayut Chokchuaiamnuay). Strong and profound, these clever poems are beautifully illustrated by the author and Sithiporn Poungsak.Influenced by fairy tales, the themes explore relationships and loneliness, joy and pain, beauty and ugliness, dreams and nightmares, and courage and fear. The rhyme schemes and word play are intriguing. The imagery is extremely creative and visual, and often disturbing. The first and the last poem on the same topic frame the book. Icy Horse melts, “leaving only a small basin/Like the grass was crying”; at the end of the book, Icy Horse is on “A New Journey,” in a cold land where he is lonely and longs for the forest. In the title poem, coffee beans and coffee machine are passionate lovers who are left with only coffee trash. These powerful poems, appealing to both children and adults, stay with the reader.
