“A Terribly Strange Bed” is a story that tells us about the luck and how deceptive and dangerous it can be. The narrator works as a traveling portrait-painter. The pursuit of his calling has led him all through England, has taken him twice to Scotland and once to Ireland. This way of life brings him into contact with all sorts of characters who tell the narrator a lot of different stories. “A Terribly Strange Bed” is one of them, told by Mr. Faulkner. Shortly after his graduation Mr. Faulkner happened to be staying at Paris with his English friend. They were both young men and lived rather a wild life in the delightful city of their sojourn. Once they got to the place where the gambling game of Rouge et Noir was played. Mr. Faulkner had played at it in every city in Europe, without, however, the care or the wish to study the Theory of Chances. But that evening he was so lucky that none could beat him. Mr. Faulkner couldn’t stop and always raised bets and that caused him serious troubles… What happened? Enjoy reading the book and find out!
