Look inside the book:

I remember that he looked at me first as if he had never heard of this celebrity, who indeed at that moment was by no means in the middle of the heavens; and even when I had knowingly explained he expressed but little confidence in the demand for any such matter. ...His young friend, at this moment, looked at Neil Paraday with an anxious eye, greatly wondering if he were doomed to be ill again; but Paraday's own kind face met his question reassuringly, seemed to say in a glance intelligible enough: Oh, I'm not ill, but I'm scared: get him out of the house as quietly as possible.

About Henry Harland, the Author:

Henry Harland (1 March 1861 – 20 December 1905) was born in Brooklyn and attended College of the City of New York and for a short spell Harvard divinity school. ...The first novels of this new period, Mademoiselle Miss (1893), Grey Roses (1895), and Comedies and Errors (1898), were praised by critics but had little general popularity.
