Many people retire and move to live in Spain. And if you want to live in an ex-pat ghetto in Torrevieja and soak up the sun, then that’s fine, but it is not everyone’s cup of tea. There is much more to living in Spain than, sun, sea, sand and sangria. After spending seven years living on the coast in south east Spain, Ken Shaw found himself alone and fed up with the boring routine of ex-pat life. Then he met Yaisa, a beautiful lady from Gran Canaria. Two years later, after moving to live in Gran Canaria with the new love of his life, he bought a finca (a rural property) in a small village in the south of the island. This is the hilarious tale of a retired Englishman who suddenly found himself taking on the task of renovating an old house and looking after a huge garden full of orange and lemon trees and tropical fruit trees, not to mention caring for hens, a pregnant cat and a bad-tempered Green Amazon Parrot. His comfortable retirement had come to an end. Now it was time to roll up his sleeves and get to work. Being the only Englishman in the village, he had to get to get to grips with the Canarian version of Spanish, so that he could communicate with the local people and learn how to survive in a climate where summer temperatures can reach over 40 degrees Centigrade in the shade. But he survived. This is his story.
